'We Are All Dying' Silk Scarf Print

Work's Communication Objective:

The following piece is a graphic consisting of images of a plastic shopping bag, and receipts, printed on 90x90cm silk. The product is a response to the consumerist situation in Qatar after the 2017 blockade. The phase “we are all dying” is rather dark and comments on the extreme nationalism and luxury that is demonstrated in almost all of the countries in the gulf region and that intensified as the blockade commenced. It is a phrase to emphasise that the only thing that is certain is an end, and that it is something nothing and no one is exempt from.
Process:

My design process began with assets: images of receipts and some plastic bags and a phrase I had typeset in Illustrator. I then bought all of these assets into Photoshop and began playing with colour overlays, using layers, and effects such as multiply etc. I designed many, many drafts until I reached a final. At first, most of my designs were very colourful. However I moved away from this in an attempt to favour the message over the aesthetics. There’s a fine line between beauty and distraction and my hardest task during this project was trying to balance those two.
Examples of sketches and drafts throughout my process:
